 Fort McArthur, San P. Lead

February 14, 1941

Dear Roxie,

I received your letter this morning (Friday) I sure was glad to get it too. I have been looking for a letter from you, (for) the last two or three days.

It has been raining here about half the time since I came, but when the sun comes out it soon dries up. The sun is pretty hot too. Oh, yes I saw the bigest (biggest) ship the United States has yesterday. IN San Pedro Harbor which is just over the hill from our Berricks (barracks).  It looks close but it is a mile and a half away. The name of the ship was the "America" It sure was a big boat.

Honey, we have all kind (kinds) of boys here. I have been sleeping by a boy from Kentucky and one from California they are both good boys. I mean don't drink or go with girls only the one (ones) back where they live. There are also two Mexicans here two (too). They are good singers.

I got my last shot day before yesterday. It didn't hurt at all, the second shot hurt worst of all. I have never been sick since I left but it is lonesome here sometimes. (always when I get a letter from home or you) KEEP WRITEING (WRITING) PLEASE)

We have plenty to eat here, it's about the same as I had at home, sometimes we have Ice cream, and lots of Pineapple. We sit at the table just like we do at home, at Columbus we eat on the run, grab what you could get and do without what you couldn't reach.

Honey, I am working on a 14 in. gun. It weights (weighs) 380 tons and shoots a 1400 lb. shell about 25 miles out to sea. It really is a big gun. I have a pretty important job to do if anyone of us makes a mistake it would be just to (too) bad. We are safe now though. So you don't have to worry.

We have to keep things cleaner here than most of the boys are used to at home.

Honey, I am finishing this letter today (Saturday) It is raining cats and dogs. The lights went out last night, is the reason I am finishing this now.

Honey, I really believe you will be true to me, but I was just lonesome when I ask you that.

Listen Dear I want to get married worse than ever now. If we were together now we would get married right NOW.

Honey I am going to sent (send) Mother's letter with yours as we cant get stamps here. I just got a letter from Grandma Lee. She told me that she hoped you would stay with Mother and dadie (Daddy) as she thought it would nearly kill Mother if you would leave.

Especially on Fridays and Saturdays when dad is away. She said that; she knew, they Loved you a lot. I wish you would stay until I come back.

Sweetheart I will have to close now but I sent you all the kisses I have, and all my love goes to you and you only,

From your loving,

Husband
