February 24, 1941

Fort McArthur, San Pedro, Cal. February 24, 1941 (Monday) Dear Sweetheart (wife) I just got a letter from Mother today and she said you had been looking for a letter. Well, Honey here one comes. I am sorry I can't write every day. But listen, I look for one from you just as hard as you do from me. Dear, I wish we were together so we didn't have to write.  Honey I get to leave camp now on Sundays. I go to chirch (church) every Sunday morning and now go to the free show down at the lower camp, Sunday night. I saw Jack Benny in "Love Thy Neighbor" last night. It sure was a good show. Oh, yes dear no girls are allowed to go. I haven't seen a pretty girl since I left Mrs. Lee's one Friday about one month ago.  Honey, I will always love you and no one else. There never was a girl as sweet and pretty as you. I would give anything to see and be with you now. All of the other boys here are lonesome and homesick to see there (their) girls. I feel sorry for some of them...

February Wed. 1941

Fort McArthur, Cal. Feb. Wed. 1941  Dear Roxie,  I reached California last night at 12:00, boy was I tired. We stayed in our cars, on the train, for four day (days) and three nights without getting off.  I think I will like it better here than I did at Columbis (Columbus) We are not allowed to leave the for 6 weeks, then only when we are ordered too (to). We are up on a high hill so we can look out on the Pacific Ocean and see ships comeing (coming) in to land. It sure is a pretty place. I will try to get some pictures, later on, and send them to you. There is a sign at the entrance of the fort that say (says) "no pictures to be taken". It is just like summer out here.  I hope you are still at home with Mother. I want to write her a letter too, tonight if I have time. Honey, I want you to be true to me while I am gone. I couldn't two-time you if I wanted to ( I don't want to ) I will have to close now if I am going to write to mother. I will try to write more the ne...

Fort McArthur, San P. Lead February 14, 1941 Dear Roxie,  I received your letter this morning (Friday) I sure was glad to get it too. I have been looking for a letter from you, (for) the last two or three days. It has been raining here about half the time since I came, but when the sun comes out it soon dries up. The sun is pretty hot too. Oh, yes I saw the bigest (biggest) ship the United States has yesterday. IN San Pedro Harbor which is just over the hill from our Berricks (barracks).  It looks close but it is a mile and a half away. The name of the ship was the "America" It sure was a big boat. Honey, we have all kind (kinds) of boys here. I have been sleeping by a boy from Kentucky and one from California they are both good boys. I mean don't drink or go with girls only the one (ones) back where they live. There are also two Mexicans here two (too). They are good singers. I got my last shot day before yesterday. It didn't hurt at all, the second shot hurt worst ...

February 16, 1942

Dear Sweetheart,  Received your very sweet letter today and was awfully glad to hear from you again dear. Honey thanks an awful lot for the box of candy it is very very good and it came on Valentine day. I am awful sorry dear I couldn't get any place to get you something nice like that. I though (thought) the little card would let you know I still love you. Honey I have been walking guard for 72 hours steady- just came off last night and I really am tired. I will go on guard at 3:00am in the morning again this time. I will be on guard for 3 hours and off nine. I will be on guard like that all the time now. That will be all I have to do, no other work of any kind. That is lots better than doing guard and working too.  You know dear the biggest reason for me sending for that case was to get your pictures. I did need it and I wanted those two pictures too.  Honey Dadd said that they couldn't get along without you and said he would hate to think what might have happened...

February 28, 1941

Dear Sweetheart,  I have been pretty blue this week because I haven't got any letters. I haven't had much time to write myself because we have been training just about all the time. We get up at 5:45 in the morning and make our beds and sweep out. At 6:00 we fall outside and take exercise. We have from 6:15 until 15 minutes till 7:00 to shave and wash. Then we eat breakfast and fall out again at 7:30 for marching. Then at 8:30, we go to the big guns for drill all day until 5:00pm. The other night we trained after supper from 7:00 until 9:00. Honey, I have plenty to do but most of it isn't very hard work. Today was payday but I didn't get anything because someone got the payroal (payroll) mixed up someway. They say that we will be payed (paid) later, but I don't know whether I will get anything or not. Some of the boys think we won't get a thing. They sure are blue tonight. We had a parade yesterday. It lasted about 3 hours. We marched just about all over San Pe...

December 18, 1941

Dear Sweetheart,  I received your good letter today and was awful glad to hear from you dear. I can't understand why it took so long for my letter to reach you, without it wasn't sent by airmail. I know how it is dear about writing, Sometimes there just isn't a thing to write about, that the way I am now, but if you are ever that way just write and say you still love me. That makes me feel a lot better dear.   Honey you don't want to do any worrying about me for there hasn't even been an enemy plane or ship close here. The only way I could get hurt is to fall out of bed, and I have never done that for years so I don't think I'll start now.   Honey I sure wish you could see me now. I have a nice little mustach now. All the boys here are growing them and some of them sure look funny. They are just about all collars, sizes, and shapes.  I hope you do stay there with Mother and Dad until I come back dear. They need someone now worse than before. I bet you...
